SeeClickFix Blog #3

  • Has the status of your issue changed since the last time you checked it?  Explain your answer.

Yes, the status has changed. My issue went from Opened to Acknowledged.

  • On Edublog #1 you were asked to predict whether or not SeeClickFix would fix the problem you reported.  Did you find that your prediction came true?  Explain your answer.

In my previous edublog I had predicted that SeeClickFix wouldn’t fix my problem due that many issues have greater importance than mine. This prediction came true due that my issue is still Acknowledged.

  • Are you satisfied with the result of the issue you reported?  Explain why, or why not.

I am not as satisfied because the broken sidewalk I reported is very dangerous due to it’s location and condition. I believe they should treat all cases equally due that they’re all concerning issues in our neighborhood.

  • Do you think that SeeClickFix is a useful tool for helping people fix problems in their communities?  Explain your answer.

I believe SeeClickFix is a useful tool to fix problems in our community because some issues can be solved through them. Not all cases can be fixed but fixing some issues can impact our community positively.

  • If you could change or improve SeeClickFix, what would you do?  Explain your answer.

If I could improve SeeClickFix I would attempt to treat all cases the same so all cases could have a chance to be fixed. I don’t find it fair that the most important the location is the more attention those cases get.

Which class project do you think was best able to help the people who resisted an oppression gain agency:  SeeClickFix or the May Day March?  Explain your answer.

I believe SeeClickFix helped most people who resisted gain agency rather than the May Day March because many issues were solved through SeeClickFIx.

  • Do the results of the SeeClickFix and May Day projects imply that one form of resistance is better than another?  Explain your answer.

I believe both SeeClickFix and the May Day March were forms of resistance but I believe SeeCLickFIx did prove that it was a better form of resistance due that it solved many cases while the march gave us no agency in return.

  • What did you learn about the status of the issue you reported to SeeClickFix?

I learned that the status of my issue has changed. It went from Open to Acknowledged.

  • Describe the response you got about the issue you reported.  What was the message you received?  Who sent you that message?

After SeeClikckFix got the report, the City of Oakland send a message to me. They said that the issue has been received and is now registered as service request.

  • Describe how the 9th grade students are tracking the progress of the issue we reported using stickies and posters.  What do each posters mean?

The 9th grade students have been tracking the progress of their issues by logging into their SeeClickFix accounts and checking their issue status. If their status has changed then they move the stickie note with their issue status to the poster it belongs to.

  • Did you change the status of the issue you reported on a poster?  Explain why, or why not.

Yes, I changed the status of my issue on a poster because it went from Open to Acknowledged.

  • Did any patterns emerge on the poster about which issues are resolved, and which are not?  Explain your answer.

There was a lot of change on posters. Many Opened issues were changed to either Acknowledged or Closed. However the majority of the issues changed status to Acknowledged rather than to Closed.

  • Do you think 9th grade students are gaining agency based on their efforts on this project?  Explain your answer.

Yes, I think some 9th graders are gaining agency because many of their issues were fixed. But many of us didn’t due that most issues haven’t been fixed yet.

  • In your own words, explain what the words RESISTANCE and AGENCY mean.

Agency is the ability to gain control over a situation or over one’s life. Resistance is to refuse something or to stop or prevent something from happening.

  • In your own words, explain what the term SOCIAL MOVEMENT means.

Social Movement is when a group of people gather to resist a cause.

  • What does the company called SEECLICKFIX do for people living in Oakland?

The company SeeClickFix attempts to fix issues around our neighborhoods.

  • Do you think SEECLIICK helps people in Oakland to resist oppression and gain agency?  Explain why, or why not.

SeeClickFix attempts to fix all the issues we report but many times it’s not possible. However, this company already helps us resist the oppression when we report an issue with them. Regardless if they fix the issue or not, we seem to resist an oppression but not gain agency because many issue don’t get fixed.

  • Explain the story of how you took your picture for the SEECLICKFIX project (Describe what you took a picture of, when you took it, where you were, how, and why).

Due that I always walk from and to home, I constantly see a lot of issues including potholes, graffiti, broken sidewalks, and littering. However, as a young girl until now there was this one sidewalk I would always stumble over. This sidewalk leads to park on 37th Ave. So due that we had to take a picture of any of the above issues I decided to take a picture of that one sidewalk. It looks like a hill due to the broken sidewalk and people face everyday problems because of this sidewalk.

  • What did you do in class to join SEECLICKFIX?  Describe the steps you took.

In order to join SeeClickFix we created an account on seeclickfix.com.

  • What did you do in class to report an issue to SEECLICKFIX?  Describe the steps you took.

First we were asked to take a picture of any problems around our neighborhood. Then we joined SeeClickFix by creating an account. Later we reported the issue, uploaded the picture of the issue and wrote the problem about it. Finally we published the issue so SeeClickFix could see it and do something about it.

  • Do you predict that the City of Oakland will fix the problem you reported?  Explain why, or why not

I predict that the City of Oakland will fix the problem I reported because it’s a dangerous issue due to it’s location and status.

Edublog Assignment #10

What is a social movement?

A social movement is when groups of people work together to resist an oppression or make some kind of change.

What is May Day?

May Day is a worldwide holiday celebrated on May 1st also known as International Worker’s Day.

How did May Day become a day to protest?

May Day started when workers struggled to gain the 8-hour work day instead of working 10 to 16 hours a day. Working conditions were severe and unsafe. So on May 1st 1886, in Chicago’s Times Square, a protest was held to proclaim the 8-hour work day. An anarchist in the crowd started fire and shootings and killings arose. This only caused strength and courage to workers. Ever since, May day is a day to protest.

Describe what Fremont HS students will be doing on May 1st?

Fremont students will be participating on a rally with other OUSD schools. The protest will start off by Castlemont while other schools and people join in. All students and people will meet at San Antonio Park where a rally will be started at 3:00pm.

Describe the work our class has done to research previous social movements this school year.

We analyzed a recent flyer made by Fremont students to aware students and people about a protest that took action a few months ago. We looked at the good and the not too good things of the flyer so we can make our May Day posters better and not make the same mistakes as them. We also learned about impactful protests such as the Black Panthers Party.

Explain how our class decided what our protest goals would be.

All the 9th grade Social Studies classes brainstormed protest goals for each class. Later, all 9th grade students took a survey to vote on the top 5 goals brainstormed by all the 9th grade classes.

Do you predict that that May Day student protest will be successful?  Explain your answer.

I believe the May Day student protest will be successful because we’ll have a plan by then. Therefore the protest will be stable and smooth.

Edublog Assignment #8

Oscar Romero was a high-ranked priest, at the Roman Catholic Church in El Salvador, who lived from 1917 to 1980. Oscar witnessed human injustice including poverty, torture, and social injustice towards the poor. Consequently, this led to the participation of Oscar Romero serving the poor by providing a voice to the oppressed.

By speaking up to equal rights, for the poor, Oscar got assassinated on March, 24 1980. While giving a memorial mass for a friend’s mother, he was killed by military officer, “Roberto D’Aubuisson” who carried out orders from the Reactionary Church and country because Oscar spoke up for the oppressed.

The people being oppressed are the poor people and Oscar because the poor were taken unfair advantage by the rich and by speaking up Oscar got killed. The oppressors are the rich and killers for both the poor and Oscar because they’re gaining power and authority by killing those who are marginalized.

http://www.marxist.com/el-salvador-assasination-of-archbishop-romero.htm

The article “El Salvador: The Assassination of Archbishop Romero, from the website ”Marxist.com”, was written by Alan Woods on March 25, 2010.

Based on the article, “On the night of Monday March 24, 1980, Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero was shot through the heart as he was saying a memorial mass for a friend’s mother. He was killed because he was giving voice to the needs of the oppressed.”

Based on the criteria for reliable sources the information from the article, “El Salvador: The Assassination of Archbishop Romero”, is trustworthy because the source has no old information. This article was written on 2010. Also the author, Alan Woods has sufficient evidence to prove his point. He uses direct quotes from Romero and is well developed.

The category of oppression being described in this situation is Social oppression because it shows the relationship between the poor/ Romero and the rich.

The level  of oppression being described in this situation is interpersonal oppression because it describes how the people in those relationships interact and behave towards each other.

Inequality and brutal acts towards the poor caused the oppression to happen. This included torture, social injustice, and poverty. So, this led to the contribution of Oscar Romero by providing a voice to the oppressed.

The effect of that oppression led to the assassination of Oscar Romero on March 1980. But after his death and hard work he managed to change state church-relationships in El Salvador. This lead to the “freedom” of the poor.

After Romero witnessed human violation to the poor, Romero became the voice to those oppressed. He spoke up for equality against the U.S Military which lead to conflicts between the government in El Salvador and the Catholic Church. However, Romero kept speaking up until tensions caused his death in 1980.

Romero’s form of resistance caused agency because after Romero’s death the poor we’re taken consideration in El Salvador. Agency is the ability to determine the outcome of one’s own life or the ability to control one’s life. On March 15, the president of El Salvador was inspired by Romero’s “option for the poor” choosing to put the poor first. Therefore, the poor we’re able to gain back their power and control over their lives.

Edublog Assignment #5

Do you think Colonization, the Encomienda System, and the African Slave trade still influence people’s lives today?

I believe all systems, used against the Africans and Indigenous, still influence people’s lives today. Because Columbus helped create all systems, we now have systems. The systems that we have today are used for manipulation just like the Spanish. Teachers take control over us in order to get work done. Or even the president, they set rules and us, the residents, have to live under them in order to live in that country. However, not all systems are used for oppression. For instance, an economic example of non-oppression is that workers get paid enough money to maintain their family or themselves.  Many systems now in days are used for oppression but many for non-oppression. Therefore, no matter the purpose of the systems we have in the present, they impact our human race both positively and negatively.

Edublog Asssignment #3

screenshot-2016-11-03-at-8-57-56-am

I am Janeth a freshman at Fremont High, currently living in Oakland Cal. I both grew up and live in Oakland, a neighborhood with violence. Regardless of my surroundings I set an example to my younger siblings so I describe myself as helpful. I am a timid girl, who likes pizza and have goals for the future  I describe myself as tall, active, and fan of Real Madrid.  Apart from my birth here in the U.S, I identify myself as Mexican, because of my parents.

To begin with a Dominant Narrative is a story told by someone who has power. One of the Dominant Narratives I chose was about Consuela, the housekeeper from Family Guy, cleaning. This shows a Dominant Narrative about me because this shows that Latino women are only good for cleaning and should pick up for others. This isn’t true because I’ve seen this and Latino women are hardworking consequently they’re making us think that Latino women are weak and useless.

Next, a Counter Narrative is story told by someone who has been marginalized. One Counter Narrative I chose for my shadowbox was a quote saying,” I am a proud Mexican”. This shows I was raised by Mexican parents and I’m proud of my heritage. I know that many are ashamed about their roots but not everyone. I am a happy American with Mexican parts and no one can take that pride away from me.

Furthermore, identity is one’s individuality so identity images are images that describe your individuality. One identity picture I used on my shadowbox was based on traveling. This picture included a toy plane on top of the World Map faced towards the continent of Asia. I love traveling because it shifts my perspective and I learn other’s cultures. Also one of my traveling goals is traveling to the continent of Asia and the plane is faced towards Asia, consequently this image further explains my goal.  I chose this image because it outlines my hobbie therefore it identifies me.

In conclusion, people see me as a immigrant. If people really knew me they would know that I am an American girl with Mexican parts. Telling the story of who I really am is important because they’ll now me better, they’ll know us better, they’ll know our story. This already became a stereotype because other races misjudge us consequently we shouldn’t fall in their chains of hate. What I learned in this unit is that the way we identity ourselves is different than others because we all have different perspectives. That no matter what race we are there would always be Dominant Narratives and we should fight back with Counter Narratives. So no matter how others view us it’s necessary to identity ourselves regardless of others.
